Our New Kitchen - Before & After

Sunday, 12 March 2017

One of the things about our house that most needed updating was our kitchen. It was terribly old fashioned and literally held together with sellotape. See the photos for proof! We spent a long time figuring out what we wanted to do and finally, we've had it done. When we moved in we had a wall ripped out between the kitchen and the dining room making them into one long room, rather than a long kitchen and a tiny dining room. We also had new windows fitted as our house had the original tin window frames, and replaced the patio doors in the dining room area with french doors. This meant we had a few areas with bare plaster, and a gap in the flooring in the kitchen from the removal of the old door too. This irritated me for so long, I hated seeing that bare cement under the floor! About a month before Christmas, our fridge-freezer gave up the ghost. We debated buying a new one but when we looked at it, it didn't make sense to do that when we planned to have an integral fridge-freezer in the new kitchen. It was the push we needed to commit, a few calls and quotes, and Cleethorpes Kitchens were who we opted to use for the kitchen itself, and we used Mat Carlisle Decorators for the painting and wallpapering.

I didn't take many before photos, it wasn't really the nicest kitchen to take photos of to be honest, but I'll share what I have.

The hideous kitchen work top we had.

Cupboard handles held together with sellotape. The amount of times these came off the doors in my hands..... rage.

Plain white doors and drawers, with the terrible handles.

The cheap vinyl wooden flooring we had fitted when we had the wall ripped out. Biggest waste of money ever, I swear anything you spilt stuck to this floor like you wouldn't believe!

Even seen a plug socket like these? Nope, neither had I until we bought this house. Those bottom holes are for an old fashioned style of plug too apparently!

The ugliest extractor fan you ever did see. Rusted and awful, and only worked intermittently, which meant spiders really liked living in it.

And this is post-ripping out some of the cupboards. Check out that wallpaper hidden exactly behind the wall cupboards! Grim.

And now, for the afters.....

Our beautiful new gloss black cupboards, with pale wooden worktops. I can't get over how much bigger the room looks now!

We bought new appliances to match with some money we got from selling our old washing machine and dishwasher, black with chrome for a modern but timeless look.

My husband's beloved Tassimo is one of the only flashes of colour in the monochrome theme, save for our kitchen chairs. I don't drink hot drinks, but he loves them and this is one of his favourite things ever.

Our new extractor fan is hidden inside a cupboard, much more discreet and easier to keep clean.

One of our favourite parts of the kitchen is our new sink and tap. Black granite sink with a 25 year guarantee and a tap that looks like it belongs in the Jetsons. I love the spiral shape of it, it has a shower spray option, and the tap is flexible meaning that rinsing the basin out after use is incredibly easy. Having black does mean water marks are very obvious, but a quick wipe soon solves that.

Our new (but very empty) integral fridge-freezer. I love that it blends so seamlessly into the rest of the kitchen.

The dining room end of the kitchen. We had the table and chairs before hand and felt they worked really well in the new kitchen still too. A glass table is a bit of a pain when you have 3 cats that are fascinated with being able to see through the table, but it's lovely. We bought the wallpaper from Ebay, lots of sellers stock it, just search for birch tree wallpaper. I am so glad we went for this, it really brings the room together.

The tiles! I was pretty set on white tiles with black grout, I think the contrast looks so good. They have a slight texture to them, and they act as a splash back as they go right up underneath the extractor above the induction hob too. We talked about getting an acrylic panel behind the hob in a contrasting colour, but then that would limit our colours options for the future. By sticking with monochrome we could add in any other colour we want via accessories.

The black marble floor tiles weren't my first choice, Stu preferred these, whereas I preferred a black marble without a border. When we went to order the ones I liked they had been discontinued and they didn't hold enough stock for our long room, so we ordered the ones Stu liked more. I am SO glad they were out of stock as I absolutely adore how these ones look. Stu was right!

Is it a bit weird to really love a utensils drawer? Because I really love ours. The holder is custom made to fit the drawer which is really long and underneath the hob. Our old drawer that holds utensils was a really awkward size so nothing fitted in it properly, this one is a perfect fit.

When we moved in the kitchen had long strip lights which we swapped for spot light style lights, similar to these new ones. They were however, ridiculously awkward to change a light bulb in, so when we found these black metal theatre style lights they fit the new kitchen just right.

We also got under cupboard lighting, it's totally hidden unless you are looking up from underneath the cupboards, and has these cute little strip lights.

Our old oven functioned on one setting, at one temperature only. We opted for a new single oven and a combi microwave oven. While there are only two of us most of the time, Stu has 3 children who we often have over for dinner, and now we have a fancy new kitchen-dining room we can host dinner parties and will need the extra oven space!

We also got an integral dishwasher and washing machine. That everything could be integral helps give the illusion of the kitchen being bigger than it is. Because it is a galley style, there is only so much room, but we now have so many cupboards we don't even know what to put in them all!

Another new favourite part of the kitchen is the new plug sockets, which have USB ports! I had no idea these existed, and this day and age that is so handy.

The other thing we also got in our kitchen, was new doors. Our kitchen has 3 doors in it, one to the garage which had a new door as we put the door in when we moved in, a door to the hallway, and a door to the living room. The living room door never shut properly, the door was too big for the frame, which meant never being able to keep the animals out of the kitchen, no matter how much we might have needed to. The other problem with our old doors, was that they had door handles. Even if we could shut all the doors to the kitchen, Ashen our rottie-cross can operate door handles and that means never being able to shut him out of the kitchen. We picked out chrome door knobs for the new doors, because unless Ashen grows opposable thumbs, he won't be able to operate these. Makes moping the kitchen floor much easier without dog-faced interruptions!

We are so utterly thrilled with the new kitchen, all the new cupboard space means everything has a home. Previously lots of our pots and pans had to live in the garage because we had no room for them, we have the room now! All that work top space, without anything bar the essentials having to live on the side, so wonderful. I can't wait to host dinner parties now!

Much love,

Colourpop Haul III

Thursday, 9 March 2017

By now it's fairly obvious that I'm a big fan of Colourpop, so when I got money for my birthday I knew what I was spending it on, as they happened to have a sale at the same time. Meant to be! Some of these products are discontinued but I couldn't resist sharing.

'
It wouldn't be a Colourpop order without some liquid lipstick!

I ordered Lychee in the classic ultra matte lip, and Bijou in the ultra satin lip. Lychee is in Colourpop's usual packaging, whereas Bijou was a limited edition winter colour hence the matte black packaging. I really like both the styles of packaging, they are sturdy and always full of product, and the applicators are nice and easy to use.

Lychee is a super bright purple toned pink that will just be amazing in the summer, and Bijou is purple toned again (yes, I have a problem and treat purple lipstick like Pokemon), but more of an aubergine. I'd consider this a day to day colour for me and am really glad I snapped it up before it was discontinued. Colourpop do bring the odd colour back, so it's worth keeping an eye out!

From left to right, this is Flower Shop, Fizz and Patchwork in the super shock shadows. These were all being discontinued and I love green toned eye shadow, so I had to have them. I know people think you shouldn't wear green eye makeup with green eyes, but I absolutely love it.

When I ordered Colourpop were also celebrating hitting one million followers on instagram, which meant I got this limited edition pressed eye shadow 'Milli' for free. They have just released pressed eye shadow for the first time so I was excited to get it.

The pressed shadows are designed to be added to a palette, rather than being a stand alone product, so they come in a small round metal pan. They do sell palettes that fit their pressed eye shadow that I plan to invest in at some point.

I also decided to try out their creme gel eye liner. I suck at applying eye liner, liquid eye liner is basically my nemesis, so a pencil style is about as much as I can handle. I opted for it in the shade 'Bee Sting'.

The blue stripe at the bottom is the gel eye liner, it is so soft and doesn't drag at all on application. I wore it out to a gig that was very warm and it didn't budge at all. It's bright and beautiful and I will absolutely be buying more of them!

Top to bottom the shadows are Milli, Fizz, Flower Shop and Patchwork. Milli is a lovely orange toned bronze, Fizz is a bright acidic green that is just so fun, Flower Shop is a muted green and Patchwork is a very deep blue with hints of black and glitter.

In bright sun light you can really see how glittery and pearlescent the shades are. The super shock shadows are the creamiest eye shadows you could ever use. They are very different to your usual eye shadow, but I love them. Milli is a colour that is really build-able but also blend-able, I'm excited to try more of their new pressed eye shadows.

Much love,

Adult Colouring Books : The Flower Year by Leila Duly Review*

Tuesday, 7 March 2017

Adult colourings books became a big trend in 2016 and that trend shows no sign of going anywhere. I've had a few different ones now, and I really like the super detailed ones, they take so much concentration that they really help your mind forget everything else you might be thinking about, and helps you relax.

The lovely folks at Laurence King Publishing recently sent me Leila Duly's newest book, 'The Flower Year'*. I had Leila Duly's first book before and it was beautiful, but this, this is something else.

This is a hard back book, beautifully bound, in a pale pink with gold foil lettering on the front. If someone in your life likes colouring books, this would be a truly lovely gift. It feels so expensive and luxurious.

Leila Duly is known for her flowers, and this book features every month of the year split up by flowers. It's such a lovely concept!

The sketches are heavily detailed and I'd recommend fine pencils for colouring this in. This book will take so many hours to colour in completely, for £9.99 this really is an absolute bargain! It even features a ribbon bookmark to keep your place.

This is the sort of colouring book you could proudly leave on your coffee table for everyone to see, it's genuinely lovely and showcases Leila Duly's work in a wonderful way.

Much love,
Kitty xxxx

Lace Dreams with Evans*

Sunday, 5 March 2017

Ever see an item of clothing and just know that it is meant to be on your body? That happened with this jacket. This is the City Chic MOD Biker Jacket* from Evans, and it is one of the best things I have ever worn. City Chic have been stocked on Evans for a little while but I hadn't had chance to try them out, but Evans kindly sent me some pieces for a photoshoot I did recently (photos coming soon!) and one of them was this absolute beauty.

Boots - Demonia (no longer available)

This outfit feels like peak Kitty, like I have finally achieved the plus size outfit of my dreams. The mesh dress is actually two layers, a simple camisole dress, and then the mesh skater dress is a totally separate layer, so you could wear it over anything you liked. It sold out almost immediately on ASOS, but you never know, it might come back into stock! To make it look a bit more put together I wore my favourite Malice harness underneath it. There are a lot of companies that make harnesses, and a lot who have ripped off this design, but Malice are the originators and I adore them!

Oh this jacket, this jacket is just everything. I love a biker jacket, and this is something truly exceptional. The actual jacket is sheer lace, so whatever you wear underneath it is visible which I love. So often I feel like a jacket hides an outfit, but not this one!

The details of this jacket are just everything. It has functioning zip up pockets that are big enough for your phone to fit in comfortably, and these lovely mesh straps give more depth to it.

It zips up on one side which is a favourite style of mine, the lapels have a mesh underside and the hardware is all silver. Silver hardware is SO rare these days and it's my favourite!

The sleeves have a zip up them too, I've worn the jacket with them unzipped with the sleeves rolled up too and it looks awesome both ways.

The fabric of this jacket means that while it adds some warmth, it isn't too warm, so I can see this being my go-to jacket for those cooler summer evenings. Every time we go out lately to somewhere I know will be on the warmer side I opt for this and always get compliments on it!

This outfit is just me in a way that plus size fashion doesn't often allow me to feel. It felt liberating and incredible to wear something that is exactly what I want, rather than just making do.

The City Chic range on Evans is definitely a new favourite and I wish I'd tried it out sooner!

Much love,

Surprise Flowers To Say Thank You

Thursday, 2 March 2017

We've had some work done on our house recently and while we've been having it done, my parents very kindly let us stay at their house. It made the disruption so much easier, especially for the dog, and we really appreciated it! We wanted to thank them and decided that sending them flowers at their work (they work together) would be a really lovely surprise, because who doesn't love surprise flowers?

After asking who people recommended to use to send flowers I opted to try out Prestige Flowers as I liked their range and their offers. As spring is coming, pretty pinks and pastels were my pick to help brighten up those dreary nights.

They came with a thank you card with your message in, and also some truffles (which I couldn't photograph as my parents ate them immediately!). They also came with the vase they are pictured in which is always handy, I don't know about anyone else, but I never have a vase when someone gives me flowers.

I picked the delivery date to send them to their work, and they arrived at 7:30am... luckily for me someone was there to sign for them! I think that's a bit early for deliveries personally, but they arrived safely and well packaged in a tall box with air holes.

In a final twist, it turns out that Prestige Flowers do a daily prize in which the 100th order of the day is refunded their money and their order is free.... well I just happened to be order 100! It really made me laugh, my Mum thought it was so funny when I told her too.

Everyone loves surprise flowers, and this was such a fun way to do it rather than by bringing them myself.

Much love,
Kitty xxxx
